There is an old story that tells
of how the Raccoon got his markings. It tells of an old crafty raccoon that was
trying to steal from Raven's smokehouse. First, he went around the house peering
in through all the knotholes in the wooden walls of the house to see if he
could reach any of the salmon hanging on the racks.
His eyes turned black from
the smoke but he finally spotted a rack that was fairly close to the smoke hole
in the roof. He climbed up but found he could not quite reach the fish with his
paws, so he turned around and tried to hook them with his tail. His tail became
ringed with the smoke that was trying to escape through the roof. He almost had
the fish when Raven returned and saw the tell tail rings around the raccoons
face and tail. As a punishment, Raven caused the markings to remain.
